Veteran Services

Every Veteran deserves a safe place to call home and the opportunity to succeed. For 30 years, Alston Wilkes Society has helped Veterans experiencing homelessness and housing instability move toward stable, independent futures. Through our Veterans Homes and Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, AWS provides housing, supportive services, and resources that help Veterans and their families achieve long-term stability.

Alston Wilkes Veterans Homes

AWS helps Veterans experiencing homelessness or housing instability build the foundation for stable, independent futures. Through its Veterans Homes in Columbia and Greenville, AWS provides safe transitional housing and supportive services for male Veterans experiencing homelessness. In partnership with the VA Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program, AWS serves more than 150 male Veterans annually with an 89% permanent housing success rate.

AWS opened South Carolina's first VA Grant and Per Diem transitional housing program for Veterans experiencing homelessness in 1996 and has remained committed to helping Veterans move from homelessness to housing and from crisis to independence for 30 years.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families

The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program prevents homelessness by helping qualifying veterans and their families gain access to the resources they need in order to successfully transition to or maintain permanent housing. In addition, AWS can connect veterans and families with other community resources such as housing counseling services, personal financial planning services, transportation services, income support services, legal services, and child care.

Temporary financial assistance payments may be available to help with expenses such as rent, utility fees, security deposits, moving costs, transportation, and child care. Interested veterans and their families work with an AWS Case Manager to complete an eligibility screening and assessment.
